| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Vera Drake |
In 1950, the British working class makes do under lean post-war conditions, often dealing in barter and black market goods. Vera Drake is the perpetually optimistic mother of two grown children who still live at home with their parents. She works primarily as a char, cleaning wealthier homes, but she'll do anything, including cheerfully helping "girls in trouble" -- she's been performing quiet, illegal abortions for the better part of two decades. When a young woman nearly dies of complications after Vera's assistance, the law comes down hard on her. Though personally sympathetic and gentle with their prisoner, the police must do their part in the inevitable, grinding legal process -- much to the consternation and sorrow of Vera's family. This 2004 British film was written and directed by Mike Leigh.
