| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Manny & Lo |
Manny and Lo are orphaned sisters on the run from social services. They sleep in their car and break into houses to steal food when they can. As if that weren't rough enough, along the way, teenage Lo gets pregnant through a casual sexual encounter. Although Lo remains in denial about her pregnancy for months, her younger sister Manny can see that Lo has not merely “put on weight,” as she claims. A visit to a clinic confirms Manny's suspicion. Totally at a loss as to how to handle the situation, the girls kidnap Elaine, a knowledgeable saleswoman from a nearby store that sells baby products. They take her up to a cabin in the woods and keep her tied up in a bedroom until they figure out what to do next. Elaine resists by going on a hunger strike. Manny feels compassion for Elaine and tries to get her to eat, successfully. The girls explain to Elaine why they kidnapped her. Over time, Elaine forms a growing bond with the girls and serves as a maternal role model, but not without demanding some freedom and respect in return.
