This movie stars Pierce Brosnan as Desmond Doyle, an Irishman down on his luck. On Christmas day 1953 Desmond's wife Charlotte leaves him and their three kids: daughter Evelyn and sons Maurice and Dermot. The S.P.C.C. At the court hearing the judge tells Desmond that he has to show a significant improvement in his financial and domestic circumstances in order to get his children back. He does get a job as a painter and works the pub with gis father singing songs. Meanwhile, Evelyn is having a hard time adapting to her new living arrangment as Sister Brigid slaps Evelyn for talking back to her. Desmond hits the bottle as hard as he working to get his children back gets himself a lawyer to help his case. They plead their case but Desmond does not get his children back.
