Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Money Pit
Walter Fielding (Hanks) is an attorney with rock stars for clients at the family law firm when his father skips town with $2.9 million of the firm's loot eloping to Rio de Janeiro. Fielding and his concert violinist girlfriend Anna Crowley (Long) have to give up the Manhattan apartment they share when her ex-husband Max “Maestro” Beissart (Godunov) returns from Europe. Max is a world famous conductor with a world-class ego to match and it is his apartment. The Maestro's assistant (Smirnov) comes by to evict them. The couple finds a home in the country but it will cost them $200K. Fielding must grovel for the money from a bratty teen rock star client eventually getting the loan. The homeowner Estelle (Stapleton) lets them have it at a bargain knowing it needs repairs.

It turns out the house of their dreams has more than a few hidden flaws. The first tradesman to negotiate with them is Art (Mantegna) the carpenter who hits on Anna. As the days pass, things go terribly wrong with the floors, the electrical wiring, the landscaping, the plumbing and more. The difficulties with the house are mounting and so the pressure builds to raise additional money for renovations. Curly the construction foreman (Bosco) shows up with a crew straight out of The Road Warrior and sets about demolishing the house while the couple goes away for the day. A permit agent comes by but leaves without getting their signatures causing the construction to grind to a halt until the permits are approved. The agent returns but Fielding falls into the floor and can't get out.

More mishaps and accidents occur before work progresses toward the “two week” completion date months later. Anna is despondent and visits with Max to ask for money for the house repairs. He wants to sleep with her but she passes out only to wake up in his bed. When she explains what has happened to Fielding the relationship is irreparably broken. They feud and spat for the remainder of the renovation ready to split the profits from the sale of the house and go their separate ways until Max sets things straight by telling Anna they never had sex the night she stayed over. Fielding wants Anna back regardless. She tells him she has been faithful all along. They get married and have Max conduct the orchestra and a rock band client of his perform at the reception in the yard of their now immaculate mansion.
