| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Hilary and Jackie |
Sisters Hilary (Griffiths) and Jacqueline (Watson) du Pre are both musically gifted. Jealous of her older sister's accomplishments on the flute, Jackie practices hard on the cello and becomes an international star after Hilary has largely given up music, married, and gone to a rural English farm to raise children. Jackie marries the renowned Argentinian and Jewish pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim (Frain), but remains restless and unhappy. She remains jealous of her sister, now living a quiet domestic life with a dependable husband, so Jackie demands that Hilary share them with her, too. Their troubled relationship hits its ultimate wall when Jackie comes down with a rare and deadly disease. This depressing but well acted 1998 British film is based on the true story of Jacqueline du Pre as recalled by her sister and brother Piers.
