| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Elena and Her Men |
ELENA AND HER MEN (Eléna et les hommes) is a French movie written and directed by Jean Renoir in 1956.
The setting is Paris, France at the beginning of the 20th century. The Polish princess Elena Sokorowska (Ingrid Bergman) falls in love with Général François Rollan (Jean Marais), a man loved by the people of France and feared by the French government. Rollan's political friends urge him to cash in on his popularity in order to attempt a takeover. They use on Elena's influence to convince the general.
Although in love with the General, Elena is also on the verge of marrying a wealthy shoe magnate and is moreover not blind to the courtship of the most famous seducer of Paris, the Count Henri de Chevincourt (Mel Ferrer). As General Rollan's party unexpectedly wins the legislative elections, Elena is more and more convinced that she's the one to whom Rollan owes his successes. Now that Rollan has got what he wants, Elena thinks that her role has ended but the General wants her to come with him in Paris.
