Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Fortune
It is the middle of the Roaring Twenties. Nicky Wilson (Beatty) is unfortunately married and waiting on his divorce, and he wants to get Fredrika Contessa "Freddie" Biggars (Channing), a dizzy flapper, safely out of New York before the momentous birthday when she will inherit a fortune based on a feminine hygiene product empire. But the Mann Act prohibits the transport of women across state lines for immoral purposes, so Nicky cooks up a scheme to have a dumb crook named Oscar Sullivan (Nicholson) marry Freddie and travel with them to California to wait out Nicky's divorce.

The prickly trio takes train and plane to LA, and settles in a cheap apartment. Freddie starts sleeping with both men, much to the landlady's confusion. (She was told that Oscar is the girl's husband and Nicky's her brother.) Oscar figures out Nicky's scheme and wants in on part of the dough. Then Freddie realizes what's up and announces she's going to give all the money to charity. So the two men decide the only way they can hold onto the money is to kill Freddie right after her birthday. This proves a lot tougher than they figured. This 1975 movie, directed by Mike Nichols, was Channing's feature role debut, and she holds her own against two big male stars.
