| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Blackjack |
Dolph Lundgren stars in this John Woo - directed film as a former U.S. agent turned private security entrepeneur. When his former agent buddy is killed guarding a VIP from terrorists, Dolph inherits his friend's adorable daughter, a plot motivating grudge against the terrorists, and a "paralyzing fear of the color white". Yes, really. To legitimize the revenge plot line, he is hired to provide security by a famous model, who is inexplicably threatened by the same terrorists. He fails to protect the model, who is kidnapped by the terrorists' assassin in order to set up a climactic final scene. But with the daughter's help, he overcomes his phobia in the last 6 seconds of the film.
This astonishing film is so appallingly conceived that it achieves a thrilling absurdity. The morass of pointless subplots, including fruitless psychotherapy with a nymphomaniac shrink and the wild goose chase after the killer into a milk factory which reveals our hero's weakness, leave so little time for the obligatory romance that the model almost disappears from the film.
