| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Lonely Are The Brave |
Cowboy Jack Burns decides to visit his friend Paul, yet learns that he is in jail for helping illegal Mexican immigrants. In order to meet him, Jack provokes a fight in a bar, which ends up with him attacking two police officers. In jail, Paul expresses his intention not to run, but to do his time and peacefully rejoin his family. Jack, who is suffering from claustrophobia and looking up to a sentence of several years for attacking law officers, manages to break out of jail and, fetching Whisky, tries to make for the next state - which means crossing a mountain ridge. Burns himself could easily make it, but wants desperately to stay with his horse - which makes a challenge.
The law pursues Jack - a humane sheriff secretly admires the cowboy, his guts and his indiviuality, but can do little the posse, that is chasing Jack with men, dogs, jeeps and a chopper. Jack and his Winchester manage to bring down a chopper, and Jack and his horse ultimately cross the mountain ridge. One glorious ride down the other side brings the two to the last obstacle: a highly frequented highway in pouring rain. The young horse panicks from the heavy traffic and Jack and Whisky are hit by a truck. The horse has to be shot, and the dying Jack Burns is picked up by an ambulance.
