Review Summary and Plot Commentary about I Was Born, But...
After moving with their family, two boys struggle to get adjusted to their new home in Yasujiro Ozu's classic silent comedy. Trouble starts when a group of ten to twelve year old boys rough up younger brother, Keiji, who looks to his slightly older brother, Chounan, for help. Because the gang of boys vow to get revenge in the schoolyard, Keiji and Chounan are rather displeased with their parents' demand to do well in classes the next day. They skip school and get a delivery boy to forge an "Excellent" on their papers, but on his way home from work, Yoshi (their father) has a conversation with a schoolteacher who rats the boys out. Their only choice is to return to school and face the bullies again, each run-in providing a number of comic variations on masculinity and honor.

1932, 100 min.
