| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Storyville |
Based on the novel "Juryman" by Frank Galbally, this movie stars James Spader as Cray Fowler, a young lawyer with powerful family ties who is running for Congress. After getting a note at a party, Cray meets Lee (Charlotte Lewis) at her father's dojo for a sexual encounter. It gets taped but Cray doesnt know. With him way behind in the campaign he reaches out to a local black leader Nathan LeFleur (Michael Warren) for votes. Nathan gets Cray to start thinking about the Fowler family skeletons and his father's death. The next night, a beaten up Lee shows up at Cray's apartment and tells him that someone hired her father to tape them having sex. He goes with her to the dojo to get the tape and gets into a fight with Lee's dad. Cray winds up beat up badly and the father is dead. Lee gets blamed for it and Cray decides to defend her. In the course of his investigation Cray finds out that his father swindled the local people out of the ownership of their property because there is oil underneath the land. In the middle of the court room drama Cray brings in a witness to debunk the theory that Lee did it which caused a huge scene in the court room in which Cray gets shot. Once healthy, Cray wins the election and finds out that the tape was done by his Uncle Clifford (Jason Robards) to keep the family power.
