Murray Abromowitz (Alan Arkin) is a good father and wants the best education for his kids but he is unsuccessful in money and love. The family (sans mother) moves frequently among apartments but ALWAYS within the city limits of Beverly Hills so that the children can get a good education. Murray isn't a deadbeat but he can't pay his bills and the family frequently moves out in the early hours without paying backrent. Through all this his children, but especially daughter Vivian (Natasha Lyonne),
try to piece together a regular life. After moving into their latest apartment Vivian meets a strange young neighbor with whom she begins to build a relationship.
But this period of normalcy is short-lived when Murray arranges to care for his psychotic niece Rita (Marisa Tomei). Rita's father agrees to support Murray and his kids so long as she stays out of trouble and goes to school. Of course, Rita doesn't make this an easy task. She frequently runs away from her new home, quits nursing school and takes drugs.
Meanwhile, Murray courts a rich woman and is rather successful. Vivian's relationship gets too personal and too sexual for her liking and she can't handle the new direction her life (and her family) is taking.
