After 20 years of collecting and studying wasps, biologist and professor Alfred Kinsey (Neeson) realized that ignorance and lack of research about sex was rampant in the United States. He decided to do an exhaustive study of American sexual behavior, and with the help of his team of interviewers, Wardell Pomeroy (O'Donnell), Clyde Martin (Sarsgaard), and Paul Gebhard (Hutton), he talked to 18,000 men and women about their sexual histories and preferences.
Naturally, his 1948 book on men and 1952 book on women were bestselling scandals. Under heat from Congress, the Rockefeller Foundation withdrew his grants, and his university began to shy away from support for Kinsey. Moreover, his own life with wife Clara McMillen (Linney) and his team was tumultuous. This 2004 movie by writer-director Bill Condon ("Gods and Monsters") is based on history and is well written, acted, and thought-provoking.
