Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Enigma (1982)
ENIGMA is a French-British production directed by Jeannot Szwarc in 1982.

Martin Sheen stars as Alex Holbeck, a German defector working as a journalist in Paris. He's asked by the C.I.A. to go to East Berlin and steal an exemplary of the Enigma encoder. With this encoder, the C.I.A. says the American specialists would be able to learn the names of the five dissidents the K.G.B. has planned to murder for Christmas.

In East Berlin, Alex is helped by his former girl-friend, the lawyer Karen Reinhardt (Fossey), who agrees to hide him in her apartment. But nothing goes as it should have been. From the beginning, the German police has been aware of Alex's presence in Berlin and Moscow has even sent its supercop Dimitri Vasilikov to Berlin in order to help its allies. Alex asks Karen to seduce Dimitri and tries to find a way to come near an encoder but the police is coming closer everyday and all those who help Alex are soon arrested and tortured.

In fact, the C.I.A. does already have the enigma encoder but the agency wants the Russians to believe the contrary. That's the reason they've sent Alex to Berlin and discreetly announced his arrival to the German police. But Alex is a master of disguise and finally manages to steal an encoder. Meanwhile, Dimitri has finally understood Alex's subtle scheme and is right behind him.
