Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Plenty
This movie begins in WWII with Meryl Streep as Susan Traherne, an idealistic British courier with the resistance in France. She has been forced to do more than she bargained for because so many others have been captured or killed. A spy played by Sam Neill is dropped in by parachute unexpectantly while the resistance is waiting for equipment to be dropped to them. He is not in the correct location and promises to stay awhile but finds that it is not possible and leaves before he can even speak to her.

Streep gets through the war and meets Tracey Ullman, a bohemian friend who she likes because Tracey is fun and truthful. She also meets Charles Dance while on holiday in Austria. Streep dates him for a time but decides to move on. Sting comes into the picture when she decides that it is time for her to have a child even though she is not married. He accepts the challenge but falls in love with her while they are trying to conceive. Eighteen months later, there is no conception and Streep has a breakdown. She is placed in a mental institution.

Her best friend, Ullman, calls Dance and lets him know that Meryl is in trouble. He goes to see her at the MI and they eventually marry. The two get posted in different places as he is a diplomat. Meryl's instability begins to affect his career and as she becomes more and more outrageous, she spins their lives out of control to a disturbing end.
