| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Days of Wine and Roses |
Joe Clay (Lemmon) is a PR man whose latest job is to provide good-looking women for a client's yachting party. He mistakes the client's assistant (Remick) for one of the women thus starting them off on the wrong foot. He tries to apologize and becomes captivated by the straight-laced, strong-minded Kirsten Arnesen.
Joe has to drink and drink hard in his profession. Arnesen is a tee-totaller. In one date, he introduces her to the pleasures of booze and pretty soon, she is learning to keep up with him.
They marry, much to the horror of Kirsten's disapproving father (Bickford), a dutiful father whose flower business is steady. The Clays have a beautiful daughter, but the picture is not rosy. They are deep in the bottle. Their problems have only begun.
This is a gritty, very difficult film to watch. Lemmon gives a masterful performance that still remains in stark contrast to his cheerful comic persona.
