| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Manhattan Project (1986) |
Paul Stevens (Collet) is an acknowledged genius among his peers. He plays brainy pranks on fellow students and has a restless, active mind. When his mother (Eikenberry) meets a research physicist (Lithgow) and they become interested in each other, Stevens gets worried. His worry increases after discovering the medical lab where the doctor claims to work is a front. It is handling atomic materials, specifically weapons grade plutonium.
With the help of his fellow student and budding love interest (Nixon), Stevens breaks into the plant and steals some of the super-pure plutonium. At first, the task is challenge enough. Now he wants to build his own atomic bomb for the science fair.
Trouble ensues when the feds find shampoo in place of some of the plutonium. One army colonel in particular (Mahoney) wants to preserve the secrecy of the nuclear weapons lab at any cost.
