| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Thieves' Highway |
THIEVES' HIGHWAY is a movie directed by Jules Dassin in 1949.
When Nick Garcos comes back home after WWII, he finds his father Yanko sitting in a wheelchair. Yanko had a truck accident while driving home from San Francisco after having sold a lading of fruits to Mike Figlia. No money was found on him. Nick is sure that Figlia is responsible for his father's accident.
Nick teams up with Ed Prentiss in order to get a load of the first golden apples of the season to San Francisco, a merchandise Mike Figlia is sure to die for. After a painful 400 miles journey without sleeping, Nick arrives in San Francisco and goes straight to Figlia's office. Figlia notices Nick's weariness and asks Rica, a local Italian easy girl, to flirt with Nick and put him to bed. In the meantime, Figlia starts to sell Nick's merchandise. But Rica falls in love with Nick and wakes him up so that he's able to stop Figlia's swindling.
Figlia is compelled to give the $4,000 dollars he had cashed in to Nick who thinks he's even with Figlia now. After having celebrated with Rica this success, Nick is attacked by two of Figlia's men who steal his money.
