| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Doctor |
Based on the book "A Taste Of My Own Medicine", The doctor stars William Hurt as Dr. Jack Mackee. Jack is a very successful doctor with a penchant for joking around. He goes to his doctor about a tickle in his throat. He is then referred to a specialist who tells him he has a growth. Upon further examination he finds out it is malignant and starts radiation treatment the next day. Jack now has go to the radiation clinic for the treatment and has to deal with the same problems with paper work and waiting like the other patients. While at the clicnic he meets June Ellis (Elizabeth Perkins). At the same time Jack is also shutting out his wife Anne (Christine Lahti) from giving him emotional support. Jack is also dealing with his practice as the other people on the staff feel that Jack should stay home and rest. The radiation doesn't work and the tumor has grown bigger. Jack is changing emotionally and he grows close to June and they throw caution to the wind and go on a crazy trip to see a show in Reno. He calls Anne from a payphone to tell her where he was and she hangs up on him. Jack eventually gives in having the tumor cut out and loses the use of his voice. Through writing on a board and using a whistle he works things out with Anne but at the same time June dies. By the end Jack comes full circle and learns humility when dealing with patients.
