| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Missouri Breaks |
THE MISSOURI BREAKS, written by Thomas McGuane, was directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde) in 1976.
Tom Logan (Nicholson) and his gang are horse thieves. One of them, Sandy, has just been hanged by the rancher David Braxton. In retaliation, they hang Braxton's manager and decide to buy a ranch next to Braxton's in order to have a place to gather the horses they steal. While the rest of the gang is heading to Canada to find more horses, Tom Logan stays at the ranch and starts a romance with Braxton's daughter. But the old Braxton hires Robert E. Lee Clayton (Brando), a famous "regulator", in order to find and kill the men responsible for his foreman's death. Clayton patiently observes Logan and soon starts to kill the members of the gang one by one.
