Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Final Cut
The Final Cut stars Robin Williams as Alan W. Hakman in a not too distant future where memories can be recorded via the Zoe implant. "Cutters" are people who can splice together a lifetime of memories into a movie length "rememory" for the family members of the deceased. Hakman is the most talented of these cutters and is highly regarded amongst those in his field. By the request of his widow, Hakman receives the account of Charles Bannister, a lawyer employed by the implant company, Eye Tech. While at another person's rememberance, Hakman is approached by former cutter Fletcher (Jim Caviezel) who offers him $500,000 to hand over Bannister's Zoe implant. Fletcher, and other implant opponents are convinced that there are secrets within the implant that can destroy Eye Tech. Hakman rebuffs Fletcher's offer but later on that day while going through Bannister's implant he sees a man at a dinner party that he thinks might be someone from his past that could potentially ruin his own life. What ensues is a cat and mouse game between Hakman and Fletcher; Hakman struggling with the discovery of this man and cutting Bannister's sinister memories while Fletcher tries at all costs to reveal Bannister's true identity. Even with a useless love angle between Hakman and Delila (Mira Sorvino), this is still a pretty good movie.
