| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Bread and Tulips |
BREAD AND TULIPS (Pane e tulipani) is a movie co-written and directed by Silvio Soldini in 1999. This film earned nine Italian Academy awards in 2000.
Rosalba Barletta is on holiday with her family. After a stop, the bus doesn't wait for her and Rosalba is left alone on the highway between Pescara and Rome. She takes the direction home by hitch-hiking and finally decides to stop at Venice, a city she hasn't visited until now. Rosalba is delighted by these few hours spent alone, she phones home on the same evening and tells her husband that she will vacation alone for a few days.
Back in Pescara, Mimmo Barletta, Rosalba's husband, is pissed and hires Costantino, an out of work plumber, to go to Venice and find his wife. Meanwhile, Rosalba finds a job in a flower shop and lives in Fernando Girasoli's flat. Fernando had helped her when she was short of money on her first day in Venice.
Rosalba, who was until now a typical housewife, enjoys these days of liberty and falls in love with Fernando. But Costantino finally finds her and makes her guilty by describing to her the despair of her husband and her sons who, in reality, don't miss her so much.
