| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Capitaine Conan |
CAPITAINE CONAN is a French movie co-written and directed by Bertrand Tavernier in 1996. This film earned two french Academy awards (Best Actor and Best Director) in 1997.
The setting is the Bulgarian frontier in the Balkans at the end of WWI. Lt. De Scève makes the acquaintance of Capt. Conan who, with his men, infiltrates every night the enemy lines in order to fight hand-to-hand with the Bulgarians. Conan is a real war hero who loves dangerous situations.
When the armistice is signed, the company moves back to Bucarest, Romania. For months, the men will stay there, waiting for their return to France. Lt. De Scève is appointed army prosecutor with the task to settle the cases of the soldiers who have committed an offense during the war. De Scèves is a reasonable man who always finds excuses to save the life of his men who don't deserve such a disproportionate penalty considering the courage they showed during the action.
The company is finally transferred to the Russian frontier in order to prevent the Russians who, a few months earlier were allies, from moving west.
