| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about When Eight Bells Toll |
Based on a book by Alistair Maclean (Guns of Navarone) this film is a spy adventure that takes place in Scotland. A specialized military marine spy Phillip Calvert (Anthony Hopkins) is sent by his command (Robert Morley) to investigate a lost gold bullion carrying ship lost in Scottish waters.
He and his partner investigate in their specialized boat and end up in a bay and a small Scottish town which seems to be hiding a mystery. The townspeople are not inclined to help and hinder the investigation.
The plot thickens when they find a wealthy English businessman and his yacht anchored in the same bay. A cat and mouse game ensues with Anthony Hopkins character also getting involved with the businessmans wife, played by (Natalie Delon), who also seems to be hiding something.
The action involves scuba diving, fights with the locals, scenic and deadly helicopter action and ends up with an attack on a castle poised on the Scottish cliffs. As with all Alistair Maclean efforts there are several plot twists and surprises.
