| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Shattered Glass |
In 1998 an idealistic young writer named Steven Glass (Christensen), writing for the influential political monthly magazine The New Republic, authors an investigative story about a computer hacker getting hired to work for a computer software company whose system he violated. When the facts in the article begin to fall apart under intense scrutiny by Adam Penenberg (Zahn) and other journalists for Forbes Digital on-line magazine, Glass fights to save his reputation and his career.
Glass accuses his editor Chuck Lane (Sarsgaard) of not standing behind him as retaliation for his taking sides when former and much beloved editor Michael Kelly (Azaria) is fired. Repeatedly asked by Lane for information and notes to verify his facts, Glass produces phony business cards, non-working phone numbers and out of service websites. Because Glass is so well liked by his fellow staffers at the publication most of them take his side and lobby the editor for leniency for him. This well acted film is the true story of events, but may be less memorable than headlines regarding fabricated newspaper articles written by Jayson Blair at The New York Times a few years later.
