| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Of Human Bondage |
Not as widely regarded as the 1934 version starring Bette Davis, Of Human Bondage starring Paul Henreid as Philip Carey is still a great film. While in France, Carey resigns himself to the fact that he isn't much of a good painter so he goes back to London to become a doctor. While in London, Carey has tea with his friend and meets waitress Mildred Rogers (Eleanor Parker), a gruff, low class woman. But Carey falls madly in love with her and asks her out for dinner. Though she rebuffs his advances and is very cold to Carey, Mildred does go out with him a few times.
But this love would haunt Carey as Mildred soon leaves him for another man. Carey then strikes up a wonderful relationship with Nora Nesbitt (Alexis Smith), a writer he met as a young art student in Paris. This ends quickly because he doesn't really love her and Mildred has come back into his life. Pregnant and all Carey takes her back into his life, wanting to care for her and her baby. But Mildred goes back to her wicked ways when she flirts with Carey's friend Griffiths (Patrick Knowles). Having reached his limits with Mildred, Carey leaves and Mildred throws every insult at him before wrecking his apartment. Carey gets sick with pneumonia and works his way back to health and eventually finds love the he was seeking in Sally Athenly (Janis Paige).
