BACK ROADS is a film from 1981 starring Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones. The film is much more of a character study than a comedy, with more drama than laughs. There is humor inherent in the situations themselves, but the film is by no means played for laughs. BACK ROADS was filmed in Brownsville, Texas and in Mobile, Alabama. Tommy Lee Jones (himself from Texas) plays a drifter named Elmore. Sally Field portrays a prostitute named Amy. Both Elmore and Amy are from Alabama. When a guy calls her a “whore” she answers that, “A whore is a 16-year-old girl with a bad reputation. I am a hustler!” You can tell this is just a way of life for her character, something she's known for awhile.
The movie begins with Amy being busted by a cop who finds her hustling in a shoddy hotel in the tiny Alabama town in which she lives. Elmore is an ex-boxer who meets Amy and spares her from getting arrested by punching out the cop trying to arrest her. They hook up as road buddies when Amy decides she needs to leave town and Elmore wants to tag along. Various problems arise on the road.
Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones have lots of natural chemistry together.
