| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Prick Up Your Ears |
Based on the book by John Lahr, Prick Up Your ears stars Gary Oldman (JFK, Hannibal) as John "Joe" Orton, a homosexual actor turned playwright. It's sort of like a movie within a movie as John Lahr (Wallace Shawn) and Anthea Lahr (Lindsay Duncan) go about writing the book that the movie is ultimately based on. Through the use of flashback we follow, mostly, the evolution and deconstruction of Orton's relationship with Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina), who is a struggling writer. The movie also covers Orton's profesional life as he becomes the successful writer Kenneth never came to be. Through the success of his plays "Loot" and "What The Butler Saw" Orton achieves fame and he's even commissioned to write a screenplay for the Beatles. But, as Orton's fame skyrocketed, Halliwell never achieves much of anything and this causes friction in the relationship. The years of Orton's sexual promiscuity in bathhouses, his fame, and Halliwells shortcomings come to a head one night for him when Orton says he wants to leave him. This pushes Halliwell over the edge and leads to the demise of both of them.
