| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Postcards from the Edge |
POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE was based on Carrie Fisher's novel and directed by Mike Nichols in 1990.
Suzanne Vale (Streep) is a young actress who must go through drug rehabilitation after an overdose. A few months later, she starts a new low-budget movie and has now to cope every night with her own mother, Doris Mann (MacLaine), who was assigned by the insurance company of the movie to watch over Suzanne and held responsible for her daughter's acts. Doris was an Hollywood star in the 50's, acting in a lot of musicals and having a tremendous ego. So Suzanne, apart of trying not to do drugs again, must compete each day with her mother for attention because the old star, though loving her only child, constantly changes the subject to herself when both are in society.
