Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a coming of age story centered around four young women on the brink of adulthood. The four teenagers are: Tibby, who is an artsy, edgy and sarcastic teen, Carmen, a full figured Latina who is still dealing with the effects of her parents' divorce, Lena, a shy, rather prim girl of Greek ancestry and Bridget, a vivacious and flirtatious soccer player.

As the story commences summer vacation has arrived and the four young girls are going to be separated for the first time. Tibby is staying home in Washington, D.C., Lena is heading to Greece to visit relatives, Carmen is going to South Carolina to visit her father and Bridget is going to the Baja peninsula to a soccer camp. When the foursome goes to a clothing store and find a pair of jeans that miraculously look great on all four of them, despite differences in weight and height, they decide that the jeans will be shared amongst them throughout the summer. Each of the girls will be responsible for mailing the jeans off to the next girl after she has worn the jeans for one week. The girls vow to honor the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants as they each embark on their summer vacation.

Upon arriving in Baja at her soccer camp it doesn't take gorgeous Bridget long to stir up trouble. She immediately starts flirting with an older soccer coach, who is totally forbidden to her since she is a student. Meanwhile, Lena is the first to experience the drama of the traveling pants. While she is wearing them in Greece she ends up falling into the ocean and nearly drowns when the hem of the jeans is caught on something under water. Luckily, Lena is rescued by Kostos, a local hottie who is working on his familys' fishing boat and happens to spot Lena. Unfortunately, when Lena's grandmother discovers her friendship with Kostos she forbids Lena to ever see him again, stating that their family and Kostos' family are sworn enemies. Unable to stay away from Kostos, Lena enjoys a romantic summer sneaking around with Kostos. Upon arriving in South Carolina, Carmen gets the surprise of her life when her Dad informs her that he has moved to the suburbs (which he swore he'd never do), gotten engaged and is living with his fiancee and her two perfect, blonde children. Carmen feels quite resentful, particularly of the fact that her Dad never seems to have enough time for her and he has built his life around another woman's children. Carmen feels that her Dad bailed out on her and he has replaced her with two perfect, white children. Carmen's dad and his fiancee, Lydia, are embroiled in wedding plans, which makes Carmen feel like a total outcast. After having a blowout with her future stepmother, Carmen takes off and is missing for half a day. When she returns to her father's home she looks in the dining room window and sees her father having a peaceful happy dinner with Lydia and her two kids. Carmen is so steamed that her father isn't out looking for her that she picks up a rock and throws it against the window, shattering the window and her own illusions about her Dad's presence in her life. Carmen heads to the bus station and heads home, defeated. Back in D.C. Tibby is toiling away at a retail store called Wallmans while making a documentary.   Along the way she makes the acquaintance of Bailey, a precocious young girl who acts as Tibby's mascot. When Bailey begs Tibby to be her assistant, Tibby gives her the job. Just as Tibby is complaining about being stuck in D.C. she is shocked to learn that Bailey has been struggling with leukemia for several years. Over the course of the summer Bailey and Tibby become friends.

As the summer draws to a close, all four girls must grapple with major life issues such as the impact of divorce, death, the loss of a parent, body image issues, being true to oneself and the loss of virginity.
