| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Das Experiment |
Tarek is a cab driver and former journalist with a degree in philosophy. When he sees an ad in the paper looking for participants for an identified experiment that pays a decent bit of cash, he decides to go for it. When he attends orientation he finds out that the experiment involves half the participants being assigned as prisoners and half as prison guards. For two weeks the participants will live in a mock prison setting and have their behavior analyzed. Tarek agrees to the conditions--that he will surrender his human rights in order to participate.
Tarek thinks the experience will make a great story for his father's paper (where he used to work.) His father, although clearly expressing animosity towards Tarek, offers to pay Tarek for the story. Tarek invest in some eyeglasses with a spy cam in them, so he can secretely record footage of the experiment. The night before the experiment Tarek gets into a car crash with a beautiful woman who is on her way back from he father's funeral. The two spend the night talking, relating, and making love.
In the morning Tarek reports to the laboratory and the women doesn't know where he's gone. Later she finds out when she lets herself into his apartment and reads his mail.
During the experiment the participants playing guards get drunk with power. They beat and kill a good natured kiosk owner whom Tarek had a soft spot for.
Throughout the film Tarek rebels by sassing the prison guards and resisting cooperation. One guard in particular become his arch rival, and the two enemeies engage in a bloody battle until the end when Tarek and the other prisoners escape.
