Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Swing Shift
As the movie begins the Japanese have just bombed Pearl Harbor, thereby commencing World War II. Jack Walsh (Ed Harris) and Kay Walsh are happily living in California when they hear the awful news over the wire. Jack tells his loving wife Kay(played by Goldie Hawn) that it is his duty as an American to enlist and fight the enemy forces. Jack and Kay tearfully say goodbye and pledge their love. While Jack is away Kay heeds the call of duty and begins working at the local Aircraft plant as a riveter. Kay, along with a multitude of other women, begins the process of learning all aspects of factory work. Naturally, the men at the factory are resentful, condescending and crude towards the women. Hazel (played by Christine Lahti), a flamboyant former singer who lives in Kay's apartment complex, also finds work at the factory. Although Kay tries to be friendly with her neighbor, Hazel rebuffs her until they finally become friends. While on the job Kay meets Lucky, a supervisor at the factory. Although Lucky blatantly hits on Kay, she remains steadfast and tells him that she is happily married and not interested.

As the days and months go by, Kay's loneliness increases by leaps and bounds. Kay develops a bond with Lucky, finds herself falling in love with him and then has sex with him. Guiltridden by her actions, Kay has a huge blowout with Lucky, severing their relationship. Meanwhile, Jack has come home on leave only to discover that Kay has been unfaithful to him. Devastated by the news, Jack leaves town. Needing a shoulder to cry on, Kay seeks out Lucky, who she catches in an intimate situation with her best friend, Hazel.
