Two older single sisters in 1936 have their peaceable Cornwall existence disrupted in when they decide take a young Polish violinist into their care.
After a particularly violent storm, Ursula (Dench) and Janet (Smith) Widington awake one day to find young man half-drowned and badly injured on the beach. They slowly discover that Andrea (Brühl) is a Polish Jew with a gift for music as an well known violinist, hoping to find his way to the United States.
The small village is not used to visitors and everyone, except the sisters, are full of suspicion, especially when Andrea develops a friendship with an attractive Russian woman vacationing nearby.
