| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Pinky |
A young, beautiful woman named Pinky (played by Jeanne Crain) returns to the South, the land of her birth, after graduating from nursing school. Pink, a light skinned black woman, has been "passing" for white while in school. Due to her light complexion Pinky has been able to get away with the ruse. In fact, Pinky has become engaged to a white doctor who is clueless as to Pinky's heritage. Pinky's grandmother, Granny Johnson (Ethel Waters), is a loving and strong woman who sacrified so that Pinky could be put through nursing school. Granny is a washer woman and it is clear she has led a simple, humble existence. Although Pinky makes it clear to her grandmother that she plans to return to the North, Granny convinces her to stay and care for an elderly white woman, Miss Em (played by Ethel Barrymore). Pinky nurses Miss Em but feels resentful due to past grievances. Pinky has memories of Miss Em treating Blacks in the town in a poor fashion.
Over time Miss Em and Pinky manage to bond and become friends. Meanwhile, a black town doctor approaches Pinky and requests that she train a group of black students. Pinky flatly refuses. When Miss Em dies Pinky (and the rest of the town) is shocked when she leaves her property to Pinky. As Miss Em's furious relatives wage a court battle against Pinky over Miss Em's will, Pinky must dig deep within herself and summon the courage to stand up for her convictions.
