Review Summary and Plot Commentary about On Moonlit Bay
As the movie begins the Winfield family has just move to a new town in Indiana so that George Winfield, the father (played by Leon Ames), can live closer to the bank he works at. Marjorie "Margie" Winfield (played by Doris Day) is the quintessential tomboy, one who loves playing baseball and wearing boyish clothes. All that changes when Margie meets William Sherman (played by Gordon MacRae), the handsome boy next door. Margie ends up almost shooting William as she struggles to take a gun away from her little brother Wesley (Billy Gray). Although the two don't hit it off at first, it isn't long before Margie is trading in her catcher's mitt for a swanky dress and heels. William and Margie share an innocent love that is accompanied by moonlit strolls and many love ballads.

Although Margie's father has wanted Margie to date (and marry) an upstanding young man he isn't very fond of William, who has openly declared his dislike of banks and the institution of marriage. George does not think his daughter has a future with such an opinionated young man. As World War II rages William makes the patriotic decision to enlist in the service. As the movie reaches its conclusion Margie and William's future seems uncertain. Will love conquer all?
