| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mahogany |
Tracey Chambers (played by Diana Ross) is a woman living in the projects who has a dream of becoming a fashion designer. Spurred on by this dream, Tracey enrolls in fashion design school and works on her craft. Along the way Tracey meets a handsome and suave inner city activist (played by Billie Dee Williams). The two share a flirtation and begin to date.
As Tracey pursues a career in the fashion industry she is knocked down a few pegs when her credentials are sneered at and no one wants to give her a leg up in the fashion business. Tracey's luck changes when she is "discovered" by a fashion photographer (played by Anthony Perkins) who sees amazing potential in her exotic looks and dark coloring. He dubs her Magohany. Quickly, Tracey/Mahogany is transformed into a diva/model who is much in demand.
The demands of Mahogany's career and her diva-like mentality create trouble in her relationship with the activist, who doesn't like the changes in his woman. As Mahogany spirals out of control she engages in an affair with the photographer who discovered her and ends up being the object of his obsessed mind. As Mahogany rises to the heights of success she is forced to look deep within herself to realize her true potential.
