| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Rosewood |
Rosewood is a story about a small African American town in Florida that endured a massacre of its people in 1923. When a married white woman is beaten by her lover she protects herself by blaming her injuries on an African American man from Rosewood. Although there is no truth in the woman's story, the mere fact that it is purported to be truth sparks a violent and merciless assault on the black citizens of Rosewood. As the white males in the nearby town of Sumner band together as vigilantes/posses they blaze a trail of destruction. Although there is no central character, Mann (played by Ving Rhames) is a newcomer to Rosewood, a strong and heroic man who acts as a catalyst for the survivors of the attack. Sylvester Carrier (played by Don Cheadle) is a resident who bands together with Mann in an attempt to flee Rosewood with his family. A white storeowner, John Wright (played by Jon Voight), shows compassion by aiding numerous African Americans as they leave Rosewood. All available methods are used as the African American townspeople band together and try to flee their oppressors.
