| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Ice Castles |
Alexis Winston (played by Lynn Holly Johnson) is a young woman in her late teens who is living with her single dad Marcus( played by Tom Skerritt). Lexy is an excellent skater and under the tutelage of Beulah Smith (played by Colleen Dewhurst) she is convinced that she can make it as a professional skater. Her hunky boyfriend Nick (played by Robby Benson) is also an avid skater. He plays on a hockey team and also has a dream of making the pros as a hockey player. Nick encourages Lexy to go for her dreams. But first Lexy and Beulah have to convince her father to allow her to travel to the upcoming skating regionals. Marcus is dead set against Lexy leaving their small town and having her hopes dashed by the outside world. Finally, Marcus gives in. When Lexy goes to the regionals she is shocked by the cattiness of the other skaters. Lexy is treated like a freak due to her old skates, her old fashioned skating outfit and her naivete about the world of skating. Once Lexy hits the ice she catches the eye of a trainer named Deborah (played by Jennifer Warren) who sees great potential in Lexy. After Deborah hounds both Marcus and Beulah they agree to send Lexy to live and train under Deborah.
Almost overnight Lexy becomes the new sensation of the skating world. She is surrounded by adoring fans, affluent people and lavish parties. When she becomes involved with an older newscaster her boyfriend Nick catches her cheating on him and dumps her. Heartbroken and miserable, Lexy drinks too much one night at a party and decides to show off her skating skills at a fancy party. Tragically, Lexy crashes into some metal furniture and loses her eyesight. After surgery and hospitalization, Lexy returns home to her dad and Beulah. Angry and depressed she refuses to bath or take care of herself and lashes out at those around her. One day her father takes her down to the frozen pond and puts her on the ice. Bruised but not broken, Lexy starts skating and is lent a helping hand by Nick, who shows up at the pond when she falls. Little by little Lexy gets her skating skills back and decides to re-enter the world of skating. Although her father is dead set against it, Lexy shows him that she is determined to follow through with her dreams. Will a blind Lexy be able to recapture her lost glory?
