Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Gentlemen of Luck
A dangerous criminal nicknamed Dotsent (Evgeny Leonov) has escaped from jail. His gang, still in prison, will not confess where they have hidden the golden helmet, a priceless historical artifact they stole. The police finds a man who looks very like Dotsent – a kind-hearted kindergarten teacher Troshkin (played by Evgeny Leonov as well). Despite the striking difference in character between the two, they want Troshkin to go to jail posing as Dotsent and try to find out where the helmet is.

The police works with Troshkin, teaching him to act and speak like Dotsent. He is coached in “jail manners” and slang and covered with fake tattoos to match those of the famous criminal. As his hair is thinner than Dotsent's, a wig is glued onto his head (yes, glued, so that he can take showers with it). When Troshkin is as ready as he will ever be, he is placed into the jail cell. At first Dotsent's buddies are wary, but as soon as Troshkin uses a couple of Dotsent's trademark threats they “recognize” him as their leader. However, when Troshkin asks them about the golden helmet, the gang acts surprised and replies that he, Dotsent, never told them where the helmet is. Troshkin quickly blames that on amnesia. Later on he informs the police of his failure, but the police is not sure whether the criminals are telling the truth. They organize an escape for Troshkin and three of the gang members, hoping that when they are out of jail they might eventually lead them to the helmet. Now Troshkin has to stay in charge of the runaway group without much help from the police, somehow keep trying to get information about the helmet, and watch out for the real Dotsent who can show up any moment.
