Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The River (1951)
Based on an autobiographical book by Margaret Rumer Godden, THE RIVER is a movie directed by the French director Jean Renoir in 1951 on location in India.

The movie describes the everyday life of a family of English settlers who lives near a large river in Bengal, India. The parents have six daughters and an 8 years old boy -Bogey- who are growing under the loving attention of Nan, their Indian nurse.

The lives of the two oldest girls, Harriet (14), the narrator of the film, and Valerie (17), will be turned upside down when a young American soldier, who lost a leg during WWII, is hosted by their neighbour. Both girls, along with their neighbour's daughter, will fall in love with him and compete to charm the young man who's unfortunately more interested in turning over his psychological problems than in flirting with these girls.

One afternoon, the young Bogey is bitten by the cobra he had secretly discovered in the garden and tried to charm with a flute, and dies. When the young soldier finally decides to leave the town, the young girls will have experienced their first suffering.
