| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Voyage in Italy |
VOYAGE IN ITALY (Viaggio in Italia) is an Italian movie cowritten and directed by Roberto Rossellini in 1953.
A British couple, Katherine and Alex Joyce have just arrived in Naples, Italy in order to sell the house Katherine's uncle has bequeathed to her. The couple is married for 8 years now and it's the first time since that event that Katherine and Alex spend some time alone together. On the first day of their arrival, they notice that they have nothing to say to each other and so they strive for some company.
They have to stay a few days in Uncle Homer's beautiful mansion and soon Katherine's romantic constitution is annoying her husband Alex, specially when she remembers her friendship with a young British poet who used to describe Naples and its marvels in his works. Katherine starts to sulk and decides to visit the museums of the city and the ruins of Pompeii while Alex takes the boat to Capri in order to enjoy the local night life.
Although Alex will stand up to the feminine temptations found in Capri and Katherine miss her husband's presence during the two nights she spends alone in the house, they both go on quarreling when Alex comes back home.
