| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Beauty Shop |
Gina is a single black mother and a talented hairstylist who recently moved to Atlanta and got a job at a swanky salon in order to send her gifted young daughter to a good music school. Her mean, pretentious boss Jorge (who pretends to have a European accent) treats her and her white friend Lynn very badly. After Gina allows Lynn to take care of a customer without Jorge's permission, Jorge gets mad and fires Lynn. Gina, fed up with Jorge, decides to quit.
But what's a struggling single mother to do? Gina decides to start her own beauty shop, but she doesn't have the funds. She tries to get a loan, but is unsuccessful at first because she is a black woman. Only after she gives the loan officer an amazing impromptu makeover does she get a loan--but only a small fraction of the money she was requesting.
With limited funds, Gina must make do with fixing up a very run-down old salon in a black neighborhood. Gina gets help from an electrician named Joe who also happens to be a talented pianist and who ends up forming a bond with her daughter. Gina then encounters problems hiring a staff because some of the women don't want to work alongside the white Lynn. With hard work, though, and thanks to bringing along some loyal old clients of hers, Gina's new beauty shop becomes a booming small business. Only problem is Jorge notices that Gina is stealing his old clients, and he attempts to ruin her by having goons break into her shop and wreck the place. Will Gina be able to rebuild her business or will she have to go back to her old job at Jorge's?
