| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Anastasia (1956) |
ANASTASIA is a film directed by Anatole Litvak. Ingrid Bergman earned the 1957 Academy award in the Best Actress category for her performance.
The setting is Paris, France in 1928. For some time now General Bounine and his sidekicks are in search of a woman who could impersonate the Grand Duchess Anastasia, the last daughter of the czar Nicolas II, who, if one believes a persistent rumor, managed to escape the firing squad in 1918. The Romanov heritage is waiting for her in a London bank.
When Bounine makes the acquaintance of Anna, the general is sure that his quest is over. Anna has just got out of a mental institution, she suffers from amnesia and she bears a tremendous resemblance with Anastasia. As the poor woman doesn't remember who she really is and as she desperately needs the security of a loving family, she quickly learns to act as a Russian noble.
A week later, Anastasia is introduced to the Russian community of Paris but the opinions are not unanimous: there is still an important part of the community who thinks that Anastasia is an impostor. Bounine knows that the opinion of the Dowager Empress, Anastasia's grandmother, is crucial in this matter so he decides to go to Copenhagen, Denmark to introduce Anastasia to the old lady. Anastasia's behaviour is so convincing now that even Bounine starts to wonder whether she may be after all the real Anastasia.
