| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Prince and the Pauper |
This is a good adaptation of the beloved classic by Mark Twain telling a story of two look-alikes, Tom Canty the street boy (Billy Mauch) and Prince Edward Tudor (Bobby Mauch). Young Canty hates his life of poverty with a cruel drunk of a father and dreams of something better. One day he sneaks into the back yard of the king's palace and meets Prince Edward, the heir to the throne, who turns out to be of the same age. Not only that, the boys look so much alike they could pass for twins. The prince is thrilled with the opportunity to try the simple life outside the palace; he urges Canty to switch their clothes. The prince leaves, hoping to have a little adventure and come back without anyone noticing anything. However, the adventure turns into a long one. When he attempts to return, Edward is kicked out by the guards. He is forced to live in the streets of London while Tom Canty is taken for the prince.
Both boys are thought mad as they continue to insist on their true identity. King Henry VIII mourns the insanity of his “son” who suddenly claims that he is not Prince Edward. John Canty, Tom's father, catches the prince and almost beats him up for not recognizing him. Edward escapes. His life of a beggar is full of misery and abuse until he meets Miles Hendon (Errol Flynn), a good-natured wanderer who takes him under his wing. At first Hendon is amused by the boy's idea of being the prince, but later on, when he sees Edward's sincere grief over the death of King Henry VIII, he begins to think that there might be some truth to it.
