| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Junebug |
This indie feature revolves around a culture clash between an urbane woman from Chicago and the citizens of a small, North Carolina town. Madeline is a sophisticated art dealer living in Chicago with George, her husband of six months. She decides to go see a folk artist living in the South, not far from where George was raised and his family still live. Thus, the newlyweds make their journey a combined business trip-family visit.
It's hard for Madeline to get used to her husband's family and their rural ways. While Madeline is instantly befriended by Ashley, her very pregnant sister-in-law, and George's father also seems to like her, George's mom and brother are reticent to accept her. And in addition to trying to fit in, Madeline has to convince the reclusive, religious painter to let her represent him. The situation looks as though it will get our of hand when Madeline must choose between paying one more visit to the painter just as a family crisis is about to occur.
The big-city folk aren't portrayed as selfish prigs, and the Southerners aren't country bumpkins. In other words, they're nuanced characters.
