| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Hole |
The whole story is told in a series of flashbacks that eventually return to the present. Liz is a troubled girl who is telling the whole story to her psychologist.
Liz, played by Thora Birch, was a student at an English college. She was obsessed with American rock star's son, Mike (played by Desmond Harrington, who is enrolled at the school to escape American fans. Her "friend" Martin, played by Daniel Brocklebank, is secretly in love with her, but agrees to help her get Mike to notice her. He arranges for Mike and Liz, plus their two friends Jeff (Laurence Fox) and Frankie (Keira Knightly) to go to this old World War II bunker. It is covered with overgrowth, but the power still works and it has a trap door and bathrooms. At first, just it seems like an extended "party" for the four of them, away from college.
Then it comes time to go and they discovered they are locked in. Liz comes up with an idea that Martin is secretly watching them and is waiting for Liz and Mike to get mad at each other because he was secretly jealous of Liz's feelings for Mike. They keep up the pretense and shout out scripted words trying to get Martin to open the door. Eventually it works.
But something doesn't quite ring true to the psychologist and Martin continues to deny that he did anything deliberate. She decides to dig a bit more. Eventually she is able to get the true story out of Liz, and the real story of what happened to the inhabitants of "the hole", the old bunker, and whether she was able to get Mike to notice her. What happened to all the inhabitants is Liz's fault, not Martin's.
