Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Little Lord Fauntleroy
Ceddie (Rick Schroder), a good-natured young boy living with his mother in a poor but happy home in Manhattan, suddenly learns that he is the only grandson of Earl of Dorincourt and, since the earl's both sons are dead, the heir to his fortune. The grandfather Ceddie has never met wants him to come and live with him in his castle. Ceddie and his mother travel to England. The earl (Alec Guinness) is a harsh and bitter old man who seems to hate the world – and the world hates him back. He never approved of his son marrying an American woman, and he still dislikes Ceddie's mother, to the point that she is required to live in a separate house and not in the earl's castle with her son. However, Ceddie's goodness and sincere admiration of his grandfather eventually win the old man's heart. Everything goes well until another heir shows up. Minna, a vulgar American woman, comes and claims that her son Ben is the real little Lord Fauntleroy, the heir to the title and the estate, because she was married to the oldest son of the earl, and Ben is their son. Ben, a mean brat, is nothing like Ceddie, and the old earl sees that. Will he still have to leave everything to him and his scheming mother?
