Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Guess Who
In this updated version of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" the racial roles are reversed as Bernie Mac takes on the Spencer Tracey role. Percy Jones (played by Bernie Mac) is awaiting the arrival of his beloved daughter Theresa (played by Zoe Saldana) and her boyfriend, Simon Green (played by Ashton Kutcher) as they come to town to celebrate Percy's 25th wedding anniversary to wife Marilyn. Percy is practically jumping for joy about meeting Simon, who he considers worthy of dating his precious baby girl. Unbeknownst to Theresa, bank loan officer Percy has run a credit check on Simon and discovered that he has an impeccable financial background and is a successful stockbroker. What Percy doesn't know is that Simon has lost his job and is between jobs at the moment. Simon has just proposed to Theresa and he doesn't want to ruin their engagement by telling his fiancee that he is jobless.
When Simon and Zoe show up at her parents' house, Percy mistakes the black taxi driver for her boyfriend. Percy is shocked when he realizes that Simon is white. As Percy tries to prove himself, Simon trys to ingratiate himself with Percy by making up a story about being a former Nascar driver. Unfortunately, Percy is a Nascar buff and he trips Simon up and proves him to be a liar. As the one upsmanship escalates between Percy and Simon the relationship between Zoe and Simon is hanging by a thread.   As Percy and Simon finally manage to find common ground between them, both men race to salvage their relationships.
