| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Nephew |
In the aftermath of his mother's death, Chad Washington (played by Harper Hill) arrives in Ireland to live with his Uncle Tony Egan (played by Donal McCann). Tony has been eagerly anticipating his nephew's arrival and has bragged all over town about his sister Karen's son. Tony, and the rest of the town, are shocked to discover that Chad is half black. Tony was unaware that Karen married a black man in America. Although at first Chad's race is a bit of a conversation piece, the townspeople quickly warm up to the handsome and charming young man. Chad meets beautiful Aislin (played by Aislin McGuckin), a young woman who shares an instant connection with Chad. As an artist Chad is inspired to draw sensual sketches of Aislin, which sets tongues wagging. Bar owner Joe Brady (played by Pierce Brosnan) is not impressed by the relationship between his daughter Aislin and the boy from America. Joe's objections have little to do with race and everything to do with his past romantic history with Chad's mother and his bitter relationship with Tony. It seems that twenty years ago when Karen Egan left Ireland it was due to a botched love affair with Joe. Unbeknownst to Joe (and the deceased Karen) Tony had a hand in keeping the two lovers apart. As old secrets rise to the surface they threaten to impact the new love budding between Chad and Aislin.
