Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Proof
A brilliant but for a long time mentally unbalance mathematician (Hopkins) has just died. His daughter Catherine (Paltrow) dropped out of college to take care of him the last five years, and though she may have inherited some of his mathematical brilliance, she fears she may also be destined for mental illness as well. The people around her -- especially her sister Claire (Davis), an irritating and successful businesswoman who flies in from New York to clean up her family's affairs -- worry about that too.

Hal (Gyllenhaal), one of the father's former students, wants to go through his papers to see if there is anything he might be able to use in his doctoral work, and he and Catherine warily fall for each other as she tries to figure out what will happen to her. John Madden ("Shakespeare in Love") directed this 2005 movie from a David Auburn screenplay of his own stage play.
